If your business is at least 51 percent black-owned, already earning revenue, and can scale and create jobs, you can apply once to Edge Growth and be considered across the funds they manage, including the ASISA ESD Fund. Spartan SME Finance Working Capital and Bridging Finance

Spartan funds established mid-sized businesses (3+ years trading, roughly R10 million to R500 million annual turnover, with exceptions down to R5 million for high-growth cases) needing R1 million or more for cash-flow gaps, contracts or assets. Apply online - the qualification form takes about 12 minutes and application-to-payout runs around 10 days. Not for startups or very small businesses.

Launch Africa Ventures Seed Fund II

Seed investment for early-stage, B2B-focused African tech startups from Launch Africa Ventures, now deploying its second fund. Initial cheques are typically around US$250,000 (about R4.5 million), with follow-on funding of up to US$1 million (about R18 million) as milestones are met. Startups can pitch at any time via the Launch Africa website.

HAVAIC (African Innovation Fund 3)

HAVAIC is a real, active Cape Town VC investing in early-stage, post-revenue African tech startups with global potential. Its current vehicle is the US$50 million African Innovation Fund 3 (third close, over US$30m committed, Feb 2026); it also co-manages the Universum Core African Fund. It does not publish cheque sizes or turnover gates - Fund 3 has deployed about US$10m across 8 startups (average around US$1.25m). Startups can pitch via the website or info@havaic.com.

develoPPP Ventures (BMZ/GIZ co-funding for SA startups)

There is no GIZ programme called Green Innovation - the real, currently open GIZ route for South African companies is develoPPP Ventures, a German BMZ programme: up to about EUR 100,000 (roughly R2 million) in non-dilutive funding for SDG-aligned start-ups with initial revenues, provided you raise a matching investment of at least the same amount. GIZ is the implementing partner for South Africa; the current application window closes 30 June 2026 via the developpp.de platform. Calls run twice yearly in six-week windows; the programme is impact-focused, not exclusively green.

4Di Capital Early Stage

4Di Capital is a Cape Town venture capital firm that takes equity stakes in early-stage African tech startups - B2B SaaS, fintech, healthtech, agtech and similar. There is no formal application form or published cheque size; founders pitch via the Get in touch route (info@4dicapital.com). Suited to high-growth tech startups seeking venture investment, not a grant or loan.

YouthStartCT Entrepreneurial Challenge (City of Cape Town)

The City of Cape Town annual #YouthStartCT Entrepreneurial Challenge gives selected young Capetonian entrepreneurs (aged 18-35) a R56,000 business enabler grant paid over 6-9 months, a prototyping grant of up to R32,000, plus 10 weeks of training and mentorship; top performers can access loans of up to R1 million through the Orange Corners Innovation Fund. The 2026 entry window closed on 24 February 2026 with winners announced in May - watch the City page for the next annual round.

Gauteng Enterprise Propeller runs a Start-up Finance Programme to help new SMMEs and co-operatives in Gauteng get finance to launch. NYDA Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu Scholarship Fund

This is a real NYDA scholarship for studying, not business funding. It pays full study costs (tuition, accommodation, meals and books, with thresholds; registration fees excluded) at public universities for first-year students in scarce-skills fields who are South African, under 35, from rural areas or townships, with household income under R15,000 per month and a 70 percent NSC average. Applications run in annual windows and are currently closed - the window historically closes around end of January, so check the NYDA site from around September.
