Strategic Partnership Programme (SPP)

This grant is applied for by large corporates and industry associations, not by SMEs directly - but if you are a small supplier (especially 51 percent black-owned) to a big manufacturer, your customer can use SPP to co-fund your machinery, infrastructure, product development and business support. The partner applies online via the dtic website; SMEs should raise SPP with the enterprise and supplier development teams of their corporate customers.

Spaza Shop Support Fund

If you own and run a spaza shop in a township or rural area and are a South African citizen, you can get a stock grant plus blended grant and interest-free-loan funding for fridges, shelving and shop upgrades. You need municipal registration and SARS registration (a 6-month grace period applies; CIPC registration is needed for funding above R80,000). NEF Strategic Projects Fund

The NEF Strategic Projects Fund provides venture capital finance to develop new strategic industrial capacity in government-priority sectors - manufacturing, renewable energy, mining beneficiation, agro-processing, tourism and infrastructure - securing black participation in early-stage and greenfield projects. Because these are often pre-revenue projects, there is no turnover track-record requirement; funding is appraised per project. Apply on a rolling basis via applications@nefcorp.co.za.

SEDFA Co-operatives Development Support Programme (CDSP)

Government support programme for registered co-operatives, now run under SEDFA with the Department of Small Business Development. It offers blended funding - a grant portion capped at R2.5 million plus a loan - for machinery, equipment, vehicles and infrastructure, alongside non-financial help like training and business development support. Funding is released in application windows: the most recent SEDFA call closed on 20 March 2026 (contact cdsp@sedfa.org.za), so check for the next window before applying.

Aquaculture Development and Enhancement Programme

The dtic Aquaculture Development and Enhancement Programme gives fish-farming and aquaculture businesses a reimbursable cost-sharing grant towards machinery, infrastructure, buildings and processing equipment. The grant covers 30 to 45 percent of qualifying costs depending on enterprise size, with a possible extra 5 percent for high-scoring small black enterprises, capped at R20 million. Informal and Micro Enterprise Development Programme

A 100 percent grant (nothing to repay) of R500 up to R15,000 from the Department of Small Business Development for informal traders and micro businesses - spaza shops, street vendors and home businesses - to buy tools, machinery and equipment. There is no online application: forms are handed out at IMEDP workshop briefings run with municipalities, trader associations and SEDFA, so contact DSBD or your municipality to find the next workshop. Spaza shops may also qualify for the separate R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund (roughly R50,000 stock plus R50,000 infrastructure via SEDFA and the NEF).

Critical Infrastructure Programme

A cost-sharing grant covering 10 to 30 percent of qualifying infrastructure costs (roads, water, electricity and similar infrastructure that unlocks a private investment), capped at R50 million - rising to 10-50 percent for agro-processing and water/electricity grid-relief projects, and up to 100 percent for distressed municipalities and state-owned industrial parks. You must be a registered SA legal entity and at least a B-BBEE level 4 contributor (15-month grace period). Applications by email to CIPApps@thedtic.gov.za.
